In 1931 the sector of extramural education for specialists’ training without giving up a work was organized. In 1933 it was transformed into the faculty of special purpose that had existed till 1936. In 1939 the faculty of special purpose renewed its work, but at the beginning of the Great Patriotic war extramural education in the institute was stopped.

On September 1, 1957 in Rostov Institute of Railway Transport Engineers the extramural faculty was founded where 610 students in 4 railway specialties were trained without giving up a work. For many years of its existence the extramural faculty has given high professional education to more than 15000 people. Many graduates of the extramural faculty successfully occupied and occupy the leading positions in railway transportation and the enterprises of other industries, the leading posts at the bodies of the state authority in Russia and the countries of the C.I.S. The graduate of the extramural faculty V.I. Ilyin was the First Deputy Transport Minister of the Russian Federation and a former extramural student of RSTU, Z.A. Mamedov nowadays is the Minister of Transport of the Republic Azerbaijan.

RSTU is the unique state higher educational establishment having the advanced educational and laboratory base, means of telecommunications and the most qualified faculty, carrying out without giving up a work, training of engineers and managers in a wide spectrum of transport specialties in borders of the Southern Federal district of the Russian Federation. Long-term experience of the system of the extramural professional education has proved its viability and its demand, both in traditional railway specialties, and in new perspective hi-tech directions of specialists’ training.

Nowadays the RSTU extramural faculty is a large educational structure of the university, with a contingent of students more than 5000 people being trained at the main university and in the branches in 22 educational programs of the higher professional education, including the programs with the reduced term of training on the basis of secondary professional and the first higher education.

Teaching work at the faculty is conducted by practically all the teachers of different chairs of the university. They include professors, candidates of sciences, assistant professors, senior lecturers and assistants. As a rule, educational work with the extramural students is carried out by the most skilled teachers. Studies of special disciplines are conducted in the laboratories equipped with the newest equipment with the use of modern computer facilities, technique of communication and other educational and laboratory equipment. The faculty has its own lecture-halls equipped with the unique facilities, allowing to intensify the educational process in conditions of short-term stay of the extramural students during sessions, comfortable hostels.
